Grade 5/6 Public Speaking Competition

The Grade 5 and 6 classes held their in-class speech competitions during the weeks of April 8-19th. The students were encouraged to write speeches on any topic and needed to be two and a half minutes in length.

Two speakers were chosen to represent their class in The Country Day School semi-final. This event occurred on April 21st and was the eighth annual competition to be held at CDS. The speakers and their speeches are as follows:
  • Rylee Baird – How to Annoy Your Parents
  • Abbey Magarelli – Hashtags
  • Karisa Jiwani – Integrity
  • Jeremy Walton – Overcoming Fear
  • Charlie Guy – Parent Language
  • Luca Fazzari – Honeybees
  • Danyal Hakeem – Are We Alone?
  • Liam Bousada – The Guinea Worm
  • Samuel Ferreira – Snow Days
  • Neyla Kirby - Siri
  • Alexie Carogioiello – Jeans
  • Cole McClocklin - Homework
These 12 speakers were judged by Mr. Liggett, Mrs. Wildberger, and Miss Belch. The following 4 categories were used to judge the speeches: Presence While Speaking, Clarity of Speech, Fluency of Speech and Interest of Speech.

Jeremy Walton (Grade 5) and Neyla Kirby (Grade 6) represented CDS at the CIS Public Speaking Competition at Royal St. George’s College on April 27th. They delivered their speeches with poise and confidence. Jeremy placed first in the Grade 5 category and both were wonderful ambassadors for The Country Day School.

Congratulations to all!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
