Author of “And Then it Happened” Excites Students about Reading

Pat Garrow, Junior School Librarian
What does an author look like? That was the first question the author, Michael Wade, asked the Grade 3 & 4 students during his visit to the Junior Library today.

Most agreed that Michael looked more like the muscled Mr. Clean character than an author, but all agreed that his bestselling series, “And Then it Happened”, were fun to read, especially the boys.

Michael began writing his stories when his wife, Laura, a librarian told him that many boys coming into the library had a difficult time finding books that they liked to read. At that time, Michael, who was a great storyteller, was working as a prison guard. He began to write down his hilarious stories and self published them.

Michael’s website, http://www.boysbookshelf.com/, describes his approach to
encouraging boys and girls to read for pleasure, which comes down to giving kids books that they want to read.

Michael’s highly entertaining presentation encourages students to exercise their brain by regularly reading for pleasure. Michael also described the process of writing an author must do in order to get their work published. On average his books are edited seven times before they get published, which is now done by Scholastic.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
