Literary Arts Scene is Thriving at CDS

The student-produced Art and Literary magazine, Portraits, has been a highly anticipated publication launched each spring at a reception attended by CDS students, faculty, parents and friends. In the past, it had consisted of Middle School and Senior School student artwork, poetry and writing submissions, all artfully presented in a student-designed magazine format.

This year, there are changes underway and Portraits is not only expanding to include examples of musical composition, costume design and sculpture, but the number of Middle and Senior School students involved has increased to 123, from 79 students last year.

Not to be outdone by the upperclassmen, the Grades 5 and 6 students have carved out a piece of the literary action and will be featured in the first-ever Junior School edition of Portraits this spring as well; totaling 103 submissions – one from every class.

Sarah Hudson, the Faculty Advisor for both Junior and Middle/Senior School publications, is thrilled about the recent growth. “Art and Literature are thriving here at CDS and this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the breadth of talent we have across all three schools.”

Mrs. Hudson is also part of the CITE Executive and the Coordinator for InCITE, an anthology of student writing and visual art published annually by CITE, the Conference of Independent Teachers of English, which was launched six years ago and now represents 16 Ontario CIS schools. This year, Mrs. Hudson submitted works from 11 CDS students, representing all three grade bands (7/8, 9/10 and 11/12).

This year’s creative writing prompt was “Make us Laugh” and the students’ work was judged by the award-winning novelist, Terry Fallis, the author of four books, including The Best Laid Plans. While all submitted works will be published, Mr. Fallis picked three award winners from each grade band to receive a prize. This year, Grade 12 student Megan Hill received Honourable Mention for her poem called “Title”.

Each award winner is also invited to participate in a writing workshop with Mr. Fallis and author Gary Barwin during the CITE Conference at Hillfield Strathallan College on April 11, 2015.

CDS will honor all students involved in Portraits this year at a special publications launch and reception on April 15th at 4:30 p.m. in the Atrium.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
