Students Pledge to Make Earth Day Every Day

Earth Day Canada is striving to reach the 1 million signature goal by recruiting thousands of young Canadians to serve as Earth Flag Heroes. In response, a group of Junior School students made the following promise in April, “I pledge to make Earth Day Every Day and reduce my carbon footprint.”

They also designed and signed their own Earth Day Flag, which their teacher Michelle Mihaichuk and the Grade 5 Green Team then packaged up and sent to the Earth Day Canada offices in Toronto last month. From there the flag will take quite a journey and ultimately reach Paris to be displayed during the COP21 (international Climate Conference) in early December.

According to Earth Day Canada’s website, “This campaign is inspired by the 1992 Earth Flag, which was taken to Rio for the Earth Summit where the first international agreement on climate change was signed. On that flag, Earth Day Canada collected over 500,000 signatures, including then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s, to illustrate the desire of Canadians to protect the planet.”

Upon receiving the CDS flag, Earth Day Canada tweeted the following response: Thank you @TheCDS1972 for creating this brilliant #EarthFlag15. Now that's how you pledge to make #EarthDayEveryday!

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
