CDS Students Discuss Politics with Mayor Tory

The Country Day School runs a summer school program each year and one of the course offerings this summer is Grade 12 Politics. On July 8, the class had the good fortune to attend the International Economic Forum of the Americas held in Toronto. This forum featured political and economic leaders from North, Central and South America.
CDS students were afforded VIP status and therefore had access to one-on-one discussions with John Tory, Mayor of Toronto, and various other politicians. As well, they were treated to public addresses by Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario and Philippe Couillard, Premier of Quebec. Some of the speakers were also economic futurists, predicting such technological advances as nanotechnology, driverless cars, and 3D printing to help with medical advances such as limb replacement.

It was a great trip, and a big thanks goes to Allan O’Dette, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, for facilitating our attendance at the forum. It was truly a memorable day!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
