CDS Hosts Weekend Debating Invitational

The Country Day School hosted its first public speaking competition in the new Senior School last Saturday.

CDS debaters were joined by their counterparts from Branksome Hall, Bishop Strachan School, UTS, Holy Trinity School, Lakefield College School, Villanova College and Sterling Hall for the CDS Invitational. Each student competed in three events: Impromptu Speaking, Interpretive Reading, and Radio Newscast.

“These students continue to amaze me every time I have the opportunity to serve as a judge,” said one parent who volunteered for the day. “Their ability to overcome what most consider to be our most common fear, and then to get up and perform in front of an audience, is impressive.”

Shanee Moran ’18, came in 3rd for her Interpretive Reading of a scene from Emma Donoghue’s Room, and 4th overall.
The CDS Debating program has continued to grow in popularity, and this year, upwards of 50 students from the Middle and Senior Schools are involved.

The first weekend in February, Coach Kerstin Wyndham-West will travel to the National Debating Championships in Winnipeg with two of the team’s top debaters, Natalie Ganzhorn ’16 and Olivia Railton ’17, in the hopes of qualifying once again for the 2016 World Debating Championships being held this year in Pittsburgh, PA.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
