Budding Entrepreneur Delivers on Tack Cleaning Services

This past summer, Grade 6 student Chelsea Lowe of Uxbridge, turned her love of horses into a promising new business.

While on the dock of the Prince Stables Riding Camp in Zephyr, Chelsea’s riding coach noted how well she and her friends Charlotte (age 15) and Zoe (age 16) were cleaning their riding boots. “You are doing that so well, you could get paid for that”, she remarked.

The three friends decided to give it a shot, creating their own equestrian tack cleaning service and coming up with the name Tack Attack that was just so fitting. Chelsea worked with her friends to create price sheets, business cards and even hats for promotion. Services vary from cleaning straps and boots, to polishing bridles and harnesses.

Tack Attack travels between the York and Durham regions to set up their booth at horse shows, offering services to competing riders. “Our first show was amazing. We made $127 and had so much fun,” says Chelsea. To get the business off the ground, Chelsea borrowed her mom’s tack cleaning equipment. But after the profitable success of that first show, Chelsea proudly stated she was then able to purchase her own equipment.

Customers quickly realized that Tack Attack provides a capable and efficient service, and in addition to employing them at horse shows, have hired their crew for barn calls and regular monthly visits.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
