Christian Mitri, Grade 10

Grade 10 student, Christian Mitri, has been playing high-level hockey since he was four-years-old. The High Performance Phys-Ed Athlete has a busy hockey schedule but still finds time to play on numerous school teams, an opportunity he cherishes.
Christian, a high-scoring centre, currently plays for the AAA Toronto Red Wings, but he’s been a part of many different clubs on his way there. He started playing house-league hockey when he was three, and quickly rose through the ranks and joined his local Brampton Rep Team. From there, he moved into AAA and played on teams in Mississauga and Markham before joining the Minor Midget Toronto Red Wings.

His hockey credentials do not end there. Christian is also is a member of the CDS Cyclones Jr. Hockey team. Despite having a jam-packed schedule as is, he found the time to play for his school team, something he really enjoys. “It’s a different kind of fun because you are with your friends; you aren’t going there an hour before just to focus, instead you can just joke around and relax.”

Christian praises CDS Coach Andrew MacMillan for his personal development, which he feels makes him a better teammate and leader, “He’s [MacMillan] been a huge influence in my CDS sporting career, he’s helped me become a leader, and to be a true teammate. He’s always been there for me; he’s a really good coach.”
The High Performance Phys-Ed program at CDS has also helped Christian achieve his athletic goals. The program offers students an extra spare, which gives them the necessary time to work on assignments and homework. “Most days I’m not home until 8 or 9 o’clock at night and doing homework that late isn’t the greatest because I’m ready for bed. [The program] helps a lot, having that extra time the following morning at school helps me finish what I couldn’t the night before. Teachers are also understanding of my situation.”

Along with hockey, Christian is very involved in other sports at CDS. In previous years he was a member of the Track and Field teams; specifically the 100m, 200m sprint and high jump, which also helped his hockey development. He explains, “The program really focused on sprinting, which helped with hockey considering the short shifts on the ice. That really helped me improve my cardio.”

This season, Christian wanted to try something different and decided to play rugby instead of track. The winger is enjoying the new experience that has seen him score lots of tries for CDS.

Socializing through sport has given Christian some of his favourite moments. He reminisces back to playing with his brother, Sammy Mitri ’15, on one of his Junior School teams as an example. “My brother and I were on the same team for a school tournament in Montréal. On the ice, if anyone tested me, I had my brother there to back me up. The hotel was a lot of fun as well; adjoining rooms and mini-sticks in the hallway meant my teammates and I had very little sleep.”
Christian is focused on his goal of reaching the next level in hockey. He plans to play Junior A this year and hopes to be drafted into the Ontario Hockey League in 2015. We wish him the best.
