Recipe #8: Keeping the promise of providing a healthy lunch program

Feeding almost 800 people a hot healthy lunch each day will be a challenge for sure, but one that will be well worth the effort! We have been working hard across many fronts to ensure success of this long anticipated program, but today, I thought I would highlight two measures in particular.

The first is the provision of a Dining Hall Steering Committee. The committee will work with all involved with a mandate to ensure that our food service mission of providing a hot, healthy, choice-based program for all is being met. This small, representative group will also help provide feedback on key initiatives such as student engagement, local food sourcing, the conveyance of nutritional/allergy concerns and food waste concerns. The committee will be populated by a combination of CDS parents, students, management and representatives from our food service provider.

Our second measure to ensure success is partnering with the right firm that will provide our food services. The School has been engaged in a significant RFP process to select a firm that could best serve our specific needs. I am pleased to announce that we have selected Aramark Canada to partner with us in our new Dining Hall.

Aramark has a long and established track record with a large number of GTA independent schools (Pickering, UCC, Lakefield, BSS, TFS, RSGC, BG, BH and the York School to name but a few). Together with this breadth of experience, Aramark will help us launch our unique marché lunch program at The Country Day School through a concept tailored exclusively to us – The Original Food Company.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
