CDS Student Wins Trifecta for Road, Mountain and Cross Cycling
Graydon Staples, a Grade 9 student at The Country Day School, won both the Mountain (12km) and Road (24km) Ontario Cycling Association’s Youth Cup U-15 Championships earlier this month in Horseshoe Valley and Ancaster.
A newcomer to the sport, having just started racing in 2012 as a result of his father’s interest in cycling, 13-year-old Graydon is hooked and has raced in assorted Road, Mountain and Cross events over the past year. He has competed in more than 16 races this season, achieving many successes, including winning the trifecta in road, mountain and cross for his age group.
Graydon’s intensive training schedule consists of a training ride each day, including two endurance rides each week of over 100km in and around his hometown of Shanty Bay, north of Barrie. He rides with Team Centurion and Development Canada for Road and Team Hardwood Trek for Mountain. The very modest athlete says he works hard, is a huge fan of racing, and is excited to begin the Cyclecross season this weekend, which runs until December.
In addition to cycling, Graydon is on the CDS Cross-Country team this term and hopes to join the Track & Field team in the spring. He trains with grit and determination and plans to bring that focus to his sports at CDS as well.
Last weekend Graydon competed in the Men’s U23 Prospects Challenge at Blue Mountain in Collingwood, which was broadcast on SportsNet. Not only was he the youngest cyclist in the race, he was up against Team Canada’s Pro Elite Team, who are all in their early 20s. Graydon placed 23rd in the grueling 121.2km-long race, only 4 seconds off the first-place finisher. Beforehand, he had admitted “It’s going to be hard, but I will just have to work for it.” He did indeed!

Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates.
