GY student and Aurora native, Lauren Michelberger is an accomplished gymnast who has competed at a provincial and national level in Ontario and abroad. After a routine of dedicating 16 plus hours a week to gymnastics, Lauren decided to change her commitment and focus solely on tumbling. A big change that has already seen success with a gold medal at the Ontario Cup this month.
Lauren has competed in gymnastics since she was nine years old. Up until Grade 10, she was also a competitive dancer but decided to lighten her training load by focusing solely on gymnastics, a decision that has helped her to achieve incredible success over the past two years.
Since making that switch, Lauren finished 2nd overall in the province two years ago and went on to represent Team Ontario in Las Vegas, finishing first overall in 2015. Last year, Lauren progressed to a higher level of competition (Level 8) where she continued to excel by finishing 1st and 2nd in the All Around competition at two qualifiers, before winning the Provincial Championship on Floor and a Bronze in Vault.
Entering the 2017 season, Lauren decided she wanted to balance out her commitment to sport and school life. “I wanted to focus more on school since it’s my last year, and I never really got the chance to see my friends as much as I would like to outside of school.” After initially wanting to stop all together, her coach suggested she simply focus solely on tumbling. The decision, as difficult as it was, has allowed Lauren to achieve the life balance she was seeking.
Her decision hasn’t stopped the recognition and success from continuing either. After missing the first Ontario Cup earlier in the year, Lauren finished 1st overall in Tumbling at the Ontario Cup earlier this month, thereby qualifying her for provincials.
While Lauren is still undecided where she will be attending university next fall, she is considering continuing with gymnastics or possibly starting cheerleading. We wish Lauren all the best at the Gymnastics Provincial Championships later this year.
