Don't Forget to Indulge in Summer Reading

As you prepare to embark on summer holidays, cottage time, summer camp, summer hours, or just time on your deck – a bounty of delicious summer reading awaits! Whether it’s one, two, three or 10 books you plan read this summer – our wonderful CDS librarians have composed some terrific suggested reading for all ages, including adults!
If we were to encourage our children to do just one thing that would contribute to their future success in life, it would be to read more. Our lives today can easily be consumed by social media vying for our attention on our multiple devices and presenting non-stop distractions for children and adults alike.

According to Scholastic, research has shown that if kids don’t use their brains over the summer, they will regress. Losses from ‘Summer Slide are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year between more proficient and less proficient students.

We hope these lists are helpful in compiling your summer reading lists. Thank you to Melissa Rutledge and Nadine MacMillan for these great suggestions and happy reading!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
