The CDS Robotics Team Off to a Strong Start

On Friday, October 23rd, the CDS high school Robotics team travelled to Victoria Park Collegiate Institute for a pre-season tournament. At the tournament were a total of 17 teams from around the GTA competing in a game called “recycled rush”. Teams were allowed to use the robot that they designed and used in last year’s competition.
Over the past month, the CDS team worked hard to modify the robot to complete more tasks and practice/train new drivers. The team played seven qualifying matches, which yielded various results. However, there was a buzz in the air about how strong a scoring team CDS has become.

During the alliance selections, CDS was picked 3rd overall. We played in 3 semi-final matches and had our scores averaged. Our on-field team (Bryan Leary, Luke Bannerman, Brian Tomkay, Zac Joffe and Michael Rokas) upset the 2nd ranked team and continued into the finals against one of the world’s best ranked robots. Competing in a best of 3 matches, CDS gave it their all. In the end, the team finished 2nd!

It was amazing to see how well the CDS team came together to make this strong performance possible, by either manning the pit area, scouting other robots, keeping the robot in working order or just plain cheering in the stands.

Our next event is scheduled for the New Year, after the 2015/2016 challenge/game is released. The CDS Robotics team is always looking to involve the greater community. If you would like to help mentor or sponsor the team, please contact Mr. Chris Wappel, Faculty Advisor and Coach.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
