More than Bricks & Mortar... It's Time to Celebrate!

As of today, we are about as far from summertime as possible, but my thoughts were drawn there this week nevertheless. You see, in the summer, the students aren't here and the physical spaces at the School just don't feel right. One might think educators find peace in the absence of activity that the summer affords – but it's quite the opposite.
In the summer, the School is just a building like any other and lacks the reason-for-being and energy that the presence of so many young and eager learners provide. And up until this week, our new building was empty and just didn't feel right.

That changed this past Monday when more than 320 students moved in. As we've said so many times before, it's the people in the building that make CDS special. Prior to this week our new Senior School was an empty shell – but is no longer. With great anticipation and a good deal of delight, our students, staff and teachers are now filling these spaces with the same sense of respect, helpfulness and purpose as always. Thinking of the phrase bricks and mortar, the most important piece to me is the mortar of the human interconnectedness that ties everything together.

It has been an absolute delight to kick off the New Year by opening these new spaces to students, and it's time to celebrate!

We hope you can join us for the Opening Celebration of the Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall and rejuvenated Senior School on Tuesday, January 26 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, including a ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:30 pm in the Mantella Family Atrium. Please click here to see the invitation that was mailed home or visit our webpage for details. We ask that you please RSVP by January 19, 2016

We are thankful for the incredible generosity of our community and the hard work of the CDS Board members and employees that made this possible. We look forward to seeing everyone as we celebrate the opening with our community.

Sincerely,

John Liggett

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
