Knowing Our Learners: Relational Teaching

Dave Harvey, Director of Academics, Middle & Senior Schools
Acting on our new strategic direction to inspire, support and know all our learners, the Middle and Senior School Professional Development Day on October 7th was focused on the importance of relational teaching.

The morning began with guest speaker, Michelle Dagnino, a generational expert, who gave an insightful and well-researched keynote on what educators need to know about the Millennial generation—it’s habits, characteristics and frames of reference. Her presentation was followed by an engaging and interactive presentation by our Drama department on body language and its role in communicating with students.

The morning concluded with a session hosted by our Student Services Department in which teachers developed support mechanisms for students with Individual Education Plans. In the afternoon, each school met separately to examine through expert/jigsaw groups a wide selection of scholarly articles centred on various aspects of relational teaching.

Our teachers left for the long weekend energized with a deepened understanding of the essential role that relationships play in ensuring student success.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
