A Desire to Explore the World

Excerpt from Spring 2014 issue of The Link:

CYNTHIA YAO ’07 was recently promoted to the position of Associate, Interactive Project Management, at SapientNitro, an interactive marketing, creative design and technology services agency in Toronto. She recently recounted how she landed her current job as follows: “I can’t quite pinpoint the exact memory, but during the decade (was it really that long?) I spent at CDS, I was taught and inspired by some of the best teachers who made me realize that, yes, there is a giant world out there, and yes, it’s waiting for me to explore.

“When I started at the University of Toronto, I joined the Students for International Development Club. It was surreal. I walked into an information session with pen and paper, and walked out with a 10-weeklong summer project in North Maragoli, a rural village West of Nairobi in Kenya. I knew  nothing about development work, and I hadn’t travelled outside of Canada for most of my life, but CDS instilled a sense of excitement and curiosity in me that made me think, ‘it is okay if I don’t know; I can always learn.’

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
