Two CDS Debaters Qualify for Worlds in April

CDS debaters were at it again this past week at the National Public Speaking Championship finals at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg. All four students competed in the mandatory four events, with three qualifying for the finals on Monday.

Grade 10 student Maeve Tebbutt qualified for all four finals in Persuasive Speaking, Interpretive Reading, Impromptu and Debating. She finished 2nd in Impromptu and won 1st place overall. Meanwhile, veteran debater and Grade 12 student, Olivia Railton, qualified for three of the finals, placing 1st in Persuasive Speaking and 2nd in Interpretive Reading, which placed her 2nd overall. Grade 9 student Maddy Ganzhorn also competed in the final for Interpretive Reading, and Grade 9 student Anna Croxon performed admirably in all four of her events.

By placing 1st and 2nd overall, Maeve and Olivia both qualified as part of the 14-person Canadian team to compete at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Sydney, Australia this April. This will be the third consecutive year Olivia has competed at Worlds and the first time for Maeve. Olivia placed 2nd overall in 2016 and won the Debating category in 2015.

Congratulations to our CDS Debaters!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
