The CDS Visual Arts was well represented at a student art exhibit and opening reception hosted by Arts Society King at the King Heritage and Cultural Centre on February 9. Twenty-two students had their artwork on display beside submissions by students from King City Secondary School and Villanova College.

Each school was asked to provide 25 individual pieces from a selection of Senior School students (some students submitted two pieces) for the Celebration of the Talented Young Artists of King Township exhibit that takes place throughout the month of February. At the opening reception last night, a number of CDS artists were on hand with their family and friends, and were joined by Head of Visual Arts, Ms. Heather Castellan and Mayor of the Township of King, Steve Pellegrini.

First place went to Grade 11 student Sarah Fusco for her oil on canvas board entitled Get Away; and Honourable Mentions went to Grade 12 student Mckenna Ryan for her Mixed Media antique door entitled Threshold, and Grade 11 student Michael Jones for his engraving on scratchboard entitled Close Up.

Awards were presented by Canadian artists Ernestine Tahedl and Ed Bartram, who both commented on the difficulty of the judging and encouraged the young artists in attendance to continue to create and celebrate their artistic talents. The event was sponsored by Engel & Völkers York.

The exhibit runs from February 6-28 at the King Heritage Cultural Centre located at 2920 King Road and open Tuesday-Saturday from 10-4. Congratulations to all who participated!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
