CDS Robotics in Oshawa

Julia Garbe, Grade 12
From March 3rd to 5th, the CDS Robotics team travelled to Oshawa for their first regional competition of the season. They achieved a great success unparalleled in CDS Robotics history!

This year’s game, titled Steamworks, is played on a 54' x 26' field complete with two airships (one on each side). Teams are required to design their robot to intake balls and shoot them into energy generators, deliver gears to their alliance’s airship, and climb a rope into the airship at the end of the match in order to be successful.

After six weeks of designing, construction and intense problem-solving, the CDS Cyclones and their robot were ready to take on this challenge.

Out of 41 teams, CDS Robotics placed a coveted 7th in the qualifying matches, leading them into the quarter-finals as an alliance captain for the first time in CDS history. Due to some tough luck and an unexpected penalty, the team did not progress to the finals. However, they strive to do so during their next competition in April at McMaster University in Hamilton!

Thank you to Mr. Wappel and Ms. Houston for organizing the trip (both robotics and mini golf) and offering their invaluable support and mentorship as always!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
