Another Successful Weekend for Robotics Team

Julia Garbe, Grade 12
From April 7th to 9th, the CDS Robotics team travelled to McMaster University, Hamilton for their second regional competition of the season.

This year’s game, titled Steamworks, is played on a 54' x 27' field complete with two airships (one on each side). Teams are required to design their robot to intake balls and shoot them into energy generators, deliver gears to their alliance’s airship, and climb a rope into the airship at the end of the match in order to be successful.

After defining excellence in tens of invigorating matches, CDS Robotics was selected to progress to the quarter finals out of 42 intimidating competitors. In the end, they lost only to the second-place alliance. However, the team is still undefeated in spirit and hope to qualify to the provincial competition next weekend!

On behalf of the team, we would like to extend an enormous thank-you to Mr. Wappel and Ms. Houston for organizing the trip complete with all of its team-building activities (Laser Tag and an Escape Room) and offering their invaluable support and expert mentorship as always! Thanks also to our dependable coach Sam Cantor (12) and tireless driver Henry “Hank the Tank” Simmons (12), as well as spirited Human Players Mackenzie Dasovic (11) and Brian Tomkay (12), and superior programmer Thomas Ross (11), and Wormy high-scorer with an unbeatable total of 129, Edward Adams.

As a graduating member of CDS Robotics, I can personally say that most of my favourite memories at CDS have been made with this team. Over my years as a part of Team 4951, I have learned and laughed countless times -- and it could not be possible without our mentors. We could never thank you enough.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
