InCite Winners

Every year, all students in CIS Ontario schools are invited to enter written pieces to the CITE (Conference of Independent Schools Teachers of English) competition. Each school may submit a maximum of three pieces – one from Grades 7 and 8, one from 9 and 10, and one from 11 and 12. These entries are all published in a book entitled InCITE, and each piece is judged by a professional in the field who chooses four overall winners in each category. This year’s writing prompt was “The Difficult Conversation” and students could respond in any written form.

The competition was judged by Paul Dunn, an award-winning playwright and actor. This year, we were very proud to hear that two CDS students had won in their categories! Mckenna Ryan (GY) came second in the 11/12 band, and Hanna Segal (9) received an honorable mention in the 9/10 band. This is an outstanding achievement, given that 17 schools competed in this competition. Hanna and Mckenna were invited to this year’s CITE Conference at Crescent School, where they took part in a writing workshop with Mr. Dunn.

Schools are also encouraged to submit artwork to the publication, and the work of 8 of our students was published. Congratulations to Lily Scheinberg (8), Bella Sun (7), Mira Cantor (10), Sabrina Pietrangelo (9), Kyra Bates (12), Julia Garbe (12), Mckenna Ryan (12) and Kate Turner (12).

All students who are published will receive a copy of InCITE at the next Academic Assembly, but extra copies are available for purchase. Please contact Sarah Hudson for more information.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
