CDS Students Intent on Making their Mark in the Legal World

The Country Day School mock trial team finished in 4th place out of 24 teams at the Judges’ Cup Mock Trial Tournament at the Newmarket Courthouse. The competition is the largest in Ontario and one of the few in Canada that holds its trials in real courtrooms in front of actual judges.

The teams are given a case in November and prepare for roles as lawyers and witnesses. The teams must prepare both prosecution and defence cases and be able to do either side based on a coin toss five minutes prior to the beginning of the trial. It is a wonderful combination of legal analysis, acting, and thinking on your feet.

CDS has competed for five years, but this is the first time it has made the final four. The CDS team was comprised of Natasha Carogioiello, Marissa Faiella, Palma Gurdulic, Sierra McNulty, Anais Leiva von Bovet and Olivia Railton. In the preliminary rounds and at the finals, the presiding judges were complimentary in their post-trial comments.

In addition to the high team placement, Olivia and Palma were presented awards of merit at the awards ceremony on April 25, which essentially means they were named as tournament all-stars. This is a group of students who are intent on making their mark in the legal world!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
