CDS Donates Harvest from its Gardens to King Foodbank

This summer, The Nobleton & King City Horticultural Society (NKCHS) partnered with The Country Day School to cultivate its vegetable gardens while students were away. As part of the Grade 9 Green Industry Outdoor Education course launched a year ago, Grade 9 students designed and built raised plant beds last fall, planted seeds this past winter, then in May, replanted the seedlings in the raised garden planter beds.

When Middle/Senior School Outdoor Education Coordinator, Andy MacMillan, inquired as to who might be interested in harvesting the crops his students worked so hard to sow over the summer, longtime CDS parent Kelly Lavis, enthusiastically volunteered. Over the summer, she and members of the NKCHS helped to water and weed the gardens with a high level of dedication and an abundance of green thumbs.

Of course the frequent rainfall worked in our favour, yielding a generous bounty of squash, carrots, beets, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, and even ears of corn, to donate to the King City Foodbank. There was also plenty left over for the CDS staff members to enjoy as well.

According to Mr. MacMillan, the tomatoes are still falling off the vine, which means the Dining Hall will be able to use some now that school is starting. “We are thrilled that we could share this harvest with local community members too.”

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
