CDS Menu Items Include Bounty Of Harvest Fresh Veggies

Neyla Kirby '22 and Georgia Benjamin '23 are quite proud of their roles as members of the CDS Dining Hall Committee. The Committee consists of Mr. Liggett and Chef Marcello, a Junior, Middle and Senior School representative, and two CDS Parent co-chairs. They meet once a term to discuss what can be improved upon, general feedback about the menu items, and students are even encouraged to put forth menu suggestions.

"The Purple Window was an add on from our meetings," explains Neyla. "And when people complained about mashed potatoes and pasta being served too often, they introduced the baked potato and Ramen Noodle bars, which have been great additions."

When asked about the harvest bounty from the CDS gardens that has been augmenting some of the offerings during the first month back, both girls were excited to elaborate.

"I think it's great that we are growing our own food and know that it's 100% fresh and good for us," said Georgia. "The homemade bruschetta made with CDS tomatoes last week was delicious."

Neyla has been a vegetarian for the past few months and both she and her sister have found it quite easy to fill their plates with fresh and appetizing offerings, many of which are from the gardens right outside their classroom, including roasted peppers and spaghetti squash soup.

"Every time I see that something has been grown in the CDS garden, I have to try it," says Neyla.
Food items are always labeled and it has been exciting to see how frequently the statement "Grown in the CDS Gardens" has appeared so far this year!

Thanks to last year's Green Industries classes for planting these bountiful gardens, for the Nobleton and King City Horticultural Society volunteers for cultivating them over the summer, and Chef Marcello and his incredible Dining Hall team for harvesting the crops and sharing the bounty with us in the Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
