U16 Girls' D2 Basketball Wins CISAA Championships

Alex O'Reilly, Jr. Girls' Basketball Coach
Finishing the season in first place in the West division, after an undefeated regular season that included victories over Hillfield Strathallan College, Havergal College, The York School and Villanova College, the Junior Girls' Basketball team entered the playoffs with high hopes and a determination to realize their goal of winning a championship.

In the quarter-final game on Thursday, November 2, CDS faced the fourth-place team in the East Division, Greenwood College. The girls led from the opening tipoff, surged ahead and maintained their margin throughout the game, ultimately winning 42 to 16.

On Saturday, November 4, CDS hosted the championship final four tournament featuring teams from CDS, Villanova College, Toronto French School (TFS) and Albert College. The semi-final game between TFS and Villanova College was close, intense and hard fought. Toronto French ultimately earned the victory by a score of 44 to 42. The semi-final between CDS and Albert College was equally close. Stellar defensive play by the entire team, a last minute basket by Sarah Anderson and fantastic on-court game management by Carly Magarelli propelled CDS to victory 30 to 27.

The championship game between TFS and CDS was a very well-played and even match. Toronto French School led at the end of the first half by one point, and carried that one point lead into the final quarter. A series of exceptional offensive plays by the backcourt duo of Drew Kennedy and Carly Magarelli put CDS ahead by 5 points with a few minutes remaining in the game.

CDS held on against full court pressure in the final minute and finished with a 49 to 45 victory!

Congratulations to all the players for a fantastic season!
