Lexie McKay Nets “Here’s My Canada” 2nd Place

Zach Lawton
Last year, when Ms. Weening suggested her Gr. 10 Communications Technology class submit video projects to “Here’s My Canada”, Lexie McKay ’19 did not see herself coming in 2nd place and netting $2,500. But that’s exactly what happened.

The short film features her sister and fellow CDS student, Chloe McKay ’21, at their family cottage in the latter months of winter.  She borrowed one of the school’s cameras and headed north to capture some of the snow as very little remained in Aurora.

Her film features hockey, Canadiana and wonderful snow-covered landscapes.  The idea to add a poem into the piece did not occur until she was cutting it together, “I literally came up with the poem as I was editing it. It was hard to start the poem, but it started to flow together soon enough.”

Lexie was surprised to finish second as she had viewed many other great submissions online. “I’m not sure why I won as I had seen many different great submissions online, but I think the poem plus the video together made a big difference.”
Her parents were even more surprised she won the award because they had not yet seen the film. “I was late completing it in such a short time frame that they never had the chance.” Her parents were also very excited that the $2,500 gift card will go toward buying Lexie a new computer to replace her old one. “My mom said, - ‘Oh great, now we don’t have to pay for your new computer!’”

Lexie cannot believe a Comm Tech class project resulted in this recognition and a $2,500 prize, but she hopes she can continue doing similar multimedia projects in the future.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
