De Simone Ready for GTHL Top Prospects Game
Last month, Jonah De Simone ’20 was returning from a hockey game with the Mississauga Reps when his father received an e-mail. The message from the GTHL head office stated that Jonah had been selected for the GTHL Top Prospects game, which has been a long time goal of his.
The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) Top Prospects Game features the 40 best, OHL Draft eligible players from all over the Greater Toronto Area. It’s a big game for young talent who hope to find their futures in the Ontario Hockey League. Jonah remembers attending the game only a few years ago and seeing current NHLers. “It’s crazy to think I was selected for this game because I’ve been watching it as a bystander for years. Just recently I saw past CDS students Victor Mete (Montreal Canadiens) and Jakob Chychrun (Arizona Coyotes) play."
Achieving that goal set many years ago, has given Jonah a sense of accomplishment. “It made me feel like all my hard work put into this has been rewarded. I always wanted to play in it - always believed I could."
As for the game itself, Jonah is preparing for this opportunity. “It is just for fun, but it is a good way to get your name out there. I’m going to try and set up my teammates with great passes and try to score goals. It’s a high level game and everybody deserves to be there. So I’m preparing for the intensity and the large crowd.”
Jonah is excited to be coached by CDS past-parent and Toronto Maple Leafs legend, Wendel Clark. He is not sure whether he’ll have an opportunity to bring up the CDS connection. “I don’t know how much interaction we’ll have – I’m just excited to meet the celebrity coaches.”
On the club side, Jonah recently joined the Mississauga Reps club after switching from the North York Rangers earlier this year. He feels this move will give him a better opportunity, especially as he hopes to see his name selected in the OHL draft early next year.
We wish Jonah the best of luck in the game which takes place on Tuesday, December 12, at the Scotiabank Pond Arena in Downsview Park.
