Dynamic Trio Treats Students to Slam Poetry

Middle and Senior School students were treated to something out of the ordinary at Monday’s Assembly this week. Following Ms. Bland’s remarks, the dynamic trio of Patrick Walters, Joshua "Scribe" Watkis and Patrick de Belen of The Uncharted, a spoken word collective from Toronto, made their way to the stage.

All three members are experienced, award-winning poets and arts educators, and proceeded to engage the Middle and Senior School students with an exuberant, thought-provoking presentation of slam poetry done in unison and individually.

The Grade 12 Writer’s Craft students then had the opportunity to work in small groups with the poets who took them through a series of writing prompts before some students shared their work with their peers. The Grade 10 English students also enjoyed a workshop later in the day, which focused on crafting poems and finding their voices in writing.

Michelle Easterling, a Grade 12 Writer’s Craft student, described afterwards how she ”loved the slam poetry” and felt as thought the students “could relate to their pieces.” She also loved how “they treated us as though we were on the same writing level as them throughout the workshop which was really appreciated.” The visit was a huge success, in Michelle’s words, “the workshop helped us to dig deep and be creative.”

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
