Fulford Debating Success - Newcomers Always Welcome!

Kerstin Wyndham-West, English, Drama Faculty
Last weekend, Arjun Walia and Tomas Chacin competed at the prestigious Fulford Debate held at Bishop Strachan School in Toronto. In spite of being in Grade 8 and competing against much older students, the boys debated at a high level.

The CDS team finished 5th out of 36 teams in the tournament, and Tomas received a coveted Citation for his third place overall finish. This exemplifies the strength of our younger public speaking and debating students.

Our Debating and Public Speaking Club meets on Thursdays from 4:30-6:00. With around 20 students from all grade levels participating in this activity each week, our younger students are developing some great skills. New participants are always welcome!

Two of our older students will also see competitive action this week. Maeve Tebbutt and Anna Croxon will be heading to Winnipeg to attend the National Public Speaking Competition at St. John’s Ravenscourt School. The girls will compete in four different debating and public speaking events in an attempt to qualify for this year’s World Individual Public Speaking and Debating Competition to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in April. A top 8 finish at Nationals will assure them a spot on Team Canada. Anaïs Leiva von Bovet already qualified to compete at Worlds at the Internationals in October.

We wish them well!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
