Grade 5 Alternatives to Road Salt

Over the past few weeks, the Grade 5 students have been learning about the environmental impact of road salt. They have researched natural alternatives to road salt, and designed an experiment to test these alternatives. Here are some reflections from the project, as well as some photos of the action.

“This experiment taught me to do a lot of research and dig and dig far and think outside of the box. I went to many different websites to find information for alternatives to help our world. To make our world a better place we need to experiment with different alternatives, to find the best solutions that will best solve the problem of how it affects our water quality. I now know that salt is bad, I’ve learned some green alternatives to melt ice in the winter. When salt migrates into lakes and streams, it can also harm aquatic plants and animals. Changes must be made, and we can’t stick to old ways just because it’s cheap, it needs to be changed.”
Dante Zandi (5J)

“This experiment helped me learn about how much road salt affects people, animals, and nature. It can affect cars, ponds and lakes, plants and farms, buildings, and even more. It also taught me that me that there are a lot of alternatives to road salt and they can work just as good.”

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
