The Grade 5 and 6 classes held their in-class speech competitions from April 2nd through April 10th. The students were encouraged to write speeches on any topic and needed to be two and a half, to three minutes in length.
Two speakers were chosen to represent their class in The Country Day School semi-final. This event occurred on April 17th, 2018. This was the 10th annual competition held here at CDS. The speakers and their speeches were as follows:
Layla Longo, Be-YOU-tiful Sebastian Dell-Elce, Google Home Reid Vincent, America’s Food Epidemic Aidan Scholten, Life on Other Planets Diya Mangat, Cyber Bullying Lauren Davies, Why We Have Dreams Brooke Wappel, Being the Oldest Sibling Ella Ballard, Child Labour Patricia Giancola, Living with My Older Brother Charlotte O’Dwyer, The Drawbacks of Self-Driving Cars Sarah Croxon, The Negative Impact of Sweatshops Noah Hudson, Life of a Student Athlete
Aidan Scholten (Grade 5) and Brooke Wappel (Grade 6) were second place finishers while Diya Mangat (Grade 5) and Sarah Croxon (Grade 6) went on to represent CDS at the CIS Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 at Royal St. Georges College. They delivered their speeches with poise and confidence. Sarah placed first in the Grade 6 group. Both of these young girls were wonderful ambassadors for The Country Day School.
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
