CDS Mock Trial Team Does it Again

Dave Downer, Senior School Social Sciences
For the second year in a row, The Country Day School Mock Trial Team has finished in the top four of 23 schools from across York Region in the Judges’ Cup. The annual Mock Trial Tournament is held in the Newmarket Superior Court of Justice in front of actual judges. This is the only high school trial tournament in Ontario to do so.

The teams are made up of six-eight students who must have four lawyers and two-to-four witnesses. The students prepare to present both the prosecution and defence sides of a criminal case, which this year was for manslaughter. The teams take a coin toss five minutes prior to the start time and must be ready to go as either the Crown or the Defence. The teams are given points for their legal argumentation and for how well they portray their roles as lawyers and witnesses.

CDS placed in the top four on Wednesday, April 11, qualifying them for the finals. Then the finals were delayed by the ice storm that pushed through Ontario, and took place a week later on Monday, April 23. CDS finished in 4th place overall. The team received plaques and a cheque for $150. In addition, Palma Gurdulic ’18 received an individual award for her performance as a lawyer in the preliminary rounds.

The CDS team consisted of: (lawyers) Palma Gurdulic, Sierra McNulty, Marissa Faiella, and Natasha Carogioiello – all graduating students. The witnesses were: Abraham Litwin-Logan (Gr. 11), Anna Croxon (Gr. 10), Sarah Gibbons (Gr. 10) and Jessica Mirkin (Gr. 10).

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
