Novice Competitors Shine at Nora McCrae Public Speaking Competition

Kerstin Wyndham-West, Debating and Public Speaking Coach, Faculty
Last Saturday, three novice students: Jessie Rudin (‘23), Danyal Hakeem (‘22) and Kate Shepherd (‘21) travelled to Branksome Hall School to participate in the Nora McRae Public Speaking Competition. All the students performed in three categories.

In the Persuasive Speaking category, Jessie focused on the continued horrific practice of testing cosmetic products on animals. Danyal finished an impressive 4th place in this category as he explored the lack of mental health resources available to teens in Ontario, and Kate examined Canada’s lack of readiness for a major natural disaster or emergency. She also finished in 5th place in Interpretive Reading and 5th in Impromptu Speaking.

The team finished in 4th place overall out of 18 teams, and individually, Danyal was 7th overall with Kate placing in 9th place. Congratulations to the whole team on these fine achievements in their first public speaking venture!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
