Making Thinking Visible

Jennifer Vipond
In May 2018, the Junior School Faculty were extremely fortunate to host a professional development workshop led by Mark Church, a consultant with Harvard University’s Project Zero Making Thinking Visible and Cultures of Thinking initiatives and co-author of the book “Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding and Independence for All Learners” (Jossey-Bass, 2011).

Mark Church works with educators throughout the world striving to create cultures of thinking in their classrooms and schools. He has a particular interest in helping teachers and school leaders think deeply about their efforts to cultivate thinking and learning opportunities for young people.

During the workshop, Mark asked Junior School teachers to reflect about the story of learning at The Country Day School: how do we communicate to our students what learning looks like, feels like, and works in order to develop a lasting understanding? Mark challenged teachers to enact powerful stories of learning, where all students can become better thinkers and learners well beyond their years at school.

Over the course of the workshop, Mark worked with teachers to establish thinking routines to transform their classrooms into thoughtFULL places of learning. Everyone was motivated and inspired by the powerful messages Mark conveyed and are looking forward to broadening our story of learning and creating a richer culture of thinking here at The Country Day School.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
