CDS Runs for Terry Fox

On Friday, The Country Day School held its 27th run for Terry Fox in which the entire school participated. In his remarks to both Junior and Middle/Senior School students, 16-year-old cancer survivor Riley Edwards, a Grade 11 student at Bill Crothers Secondary School and volunteer for the Terry Fox Foundation as a member of Terry’s Team (survivors who tell their inspirational and motivational stories on behalf of the Terry Fox Foundation), shared his personal story of fighting cancer.
Riley told the students and faculty to, “value life, don’t take it for granted. My story is very successful, but unfortunately not everyone’s is. That’s why what you’re doing today is so important.”

He went on to share how Terry once said, “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It has to keep going without me.

Thanks to schools like CDS, the Marathon of Hope continues and Terry’s dream is alive, said Riley.

With these inspirational words in mind, students and faculty/staff ran and walked throughout the School’s extensive trail system with the Junior School run/walking a shorter loop for 30 minutes and the Middle/Senior School students run/walking a longer loop that included a colour run component and fun House competition events. Over the past 26 years, CDS has raised $514,323 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
