Grade 7 Students Head to the Theatre

Sarah Croxon, Grade 7

On October 3rd, Grade 7 students travelled to the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto for an afternoon performance of “Come From Away”.

The play depicted the true story of a small Newfoundland town’s response to the attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. That day, terrorists flew airplanes into the twin towers of The World Trade Centre in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC and a fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The play used limited actors, costumes and set design to show the efforts and compassion of the people from Gander, Newfoundland. They welcomed 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from across the globe, to their community whose planes had been prevented from flying through US airspace.

The Grade 7 students all enjoyed this production and deepened their understanding of the events of 9/11 and its impact throughout the world.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
