CDS Debating Team Places 1st at Internationals

For the second year in a row, the three-person CDS Debating team  finished first overall at the International Independent Schools’ Public Speaking Competition (IISPSC) hosted by St. Clement’s School in Toronto last weekend. In total, 167 students representing 47 teams from 7 countries participated at the annual IISPSC this year.
Anaïs Leiva von Bovet ’19 was the top speaker once again this year, making it the 6th consecutive year for a CDS speaker to hold this honour. Anaïs qualified for finals in all three of her categories: Dramatic Interpretation, Radio Newscast and Persuasive Speaking. She was Top Speaker in Radio Newscast for the 2nd year in a row! Her speech on the difficulties faced by Canada’s foster care system was particularly well received.

Although Anaïs cannot qualify from this tournament again, as she qualified last year, she will move on to compete at the Nationals in February.

Maeve Tebbutt ’19 was 3rd overall and won a coveted spot to Worlds, which will be held this year in Toronto. She competed in Impromptu Speaking, Persuasive Speaking and Dramatic Interpretation. Her speech on the horrific problem of prison rape qualified her for finals and she also made finals with her Dramatic Interpretation monologue from The Laramie Project.

Following very closely behind, Anna Croxon '20 finished 4th overall. She competed in Dramatic Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking and Persuasive Speaking. Her monologue from Shape of a Girl by Joan McLeod won her 2nd place overall in Dramatic Interpretation, and her outstanding speech on the epidemic of assault cases affecting the disabled, finished in the top 5.

This is the best ever showing by a CDS team at the IISPSC tournament, with outstanding performances on all fronts. Anaïs and Anna will travel to Winnipeg in February for the National Championships and another chance to qualify for 2019 Worlds.

Special thanks to our phenomenal debating coach, Ms. Kerstin Wyndham-West, assisted by Ms. Allie Tzimas, for once again raising the bar for CDS!
