Grade 6 Eco Bot Challenge
What role can robotics play in our environment?
This was the essential question that guided the class of 6J in their integrated Language Arts, Science, Outdoor Education and Technology unit. Students were asked to examine a local sustainability issue right here on the grounds of CDS. After a walk about on the CDS campus, the students started to think of environmental concerns related to biodiversity. Once they had a few ideas, our class discussion turned to robots and the students began brainstorming ways robots could help the environment.
Their ideas stretched from filtering the air, removing invasive species, and disposing of leftover rock salt. From this, their computer programing session began as they learned to program their EcoBot, make props (some used the 3D printer), and write a story about how their EcoBot was going to make an environmental difference.
The unit culminated with a final challenge when all groups read their story, and the EcoBot performed its environmental duty on a large map of the CDS property. We are looking forward to seeing what the students of 6R and 6S come up with after the winter break when it’s their turn to take on the EcoBot Challenge! Land Acknowledgment
