Middle School Assembly: 8D Technology With Balance

Middle School assemblies are a crucial part of Middle School education and are a great venue to shine the spotlight on our Grade 7 and 8 students, as well as the issues that are important and relevant to them.

We have witnessed a fundamental shift in society with the growth in technology and social media over the past two decades. In last Thursday’s Middle School assembly, the students from 8D spoke to their peers about the impact of technology and how we all need to strive to reach a balance between real face-to-face interactions and those that we have with our screen.
The students spoke about how when we text sometimes our true meaning can be lost. Sometimes even a compliment can be taken the wrong way because the receiver is unable to see the sender’s emotions, or respond to how they are saying what is being communicated. It is far easier to recognize emotions when we are not communicating behind a screen.

8D then shared a video by rapper Prince Ea where the message was quite simple: Be balanced, be mindful, be present, be here. Please take three minutes to watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRl8EIhrQjQ

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
