Boys' Hockey Captures CISAA Gold

Zach Lawton
Congratulations to The Country Day School Boys’ Hockey Team who captured CISAA Gold this past week, for the first time since 2016.
After a tricky season with a 5-3-1 record, CDS landed a berth in the semi-finals at the Aurora Recreation Complex against a tough Crestwood Prep opponent. The team wasn’t in the best of form after dropping the final two games of the regular season, but the boys put that behind them to see out a commanding 3-1 win. This meant the team landed themselves in another CISAA final away game at Greenwood College School.

The many snow days this year created scheduling conflicts, causing the final to be pushed back to Monday, March 4th – the same day as the Term 2 Athletic Assembly. This created an opportunity to surprise the team with motivational videos from many CDS Hockey Alumni. Jonah De Simone '21, Eric Selvaggi '10, Tyler Allison '18, Cooper Wright '18, Nolan Brown '18, Mike Cammalleri '99 and Victor Mete '16 (along with Canadiens teammate Jesperi Kotkaniemi) all sent their well wishes to the team before the final that afternoon.

A raucous crowd greeted CDS who stayed alive in the first period thanks to their goalie. “[Liam Falconer ‘21] kept us in the game making several big stops” explained Head Coach David Drake. Eventually Steven Li ’21 would start the scoring followed by Quinn Binnie ’22, Oliver Carlton ’21 and Brian Turner ’19 potting an empty-netter to seal the deal.

Well done to the team on another successful season and for bringing home more silverware to CDS!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
