Self-Care in the Middle School

Courtney Kroen, MS Guidance Counsellor
Our Middle School students are at an age where they are developing their toolkit of life skills to help strengthen their relationships, explore their interests and passions, negotiate conflicts and become self-advocates (to name just a few!). Among the many skills students need to thrive and add to their toolkit, self-care, is one they have recently been exploring during our Monday morning advisory sessions.
As we enter our third and final term of the year, self-care is particularly important for our Middle School students. We work together to help them understand not only what self-care means, but also how to recognize when they need to take the time for themselves and what self-care can look like.

Being a Middle School student is a fun and exciting time, but there are occasions that can also be stressful. Students have learned that by implementing some self-care strategies into their routine they can help themselves manage the ups and downs that come with being a student at this age.

Self-care looks different for everybody and what may work for one student may not work for another. Quality sleep, spending time with friends and family, playing a sport, spending time in nature, cozying up with a good book are all examples of self-care. Self-care is an important way to live each and every day to ensure you feel refreshed, energized, and achieve success both inside and outside of the classroom.

“Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.”

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
