Let Nothing go to Waste

Myah Patel is in Grade 7 and a self-professed craft lover. She also cares deeply about the environment and the planet Earth. This summer, Myah learned from her mother, Hulimar, a Parent volunteer for CDS’s Pre-owned Uniform Sales, that the more-worn articles of clothing were sometimes deemed unsellable and destined for landfill.
This news made her want to take action. Myah and her aunt are avid craft makers and together they set about sewing hair scrunchies, bows and pencil cases from second-hand CDS kilts and tunics. She and her mom then inquired whether they could sell these items at the first Pre-owned Uniform Sale in September. Myah’s products sold like hot cakes and she raised $100 over the first three days, which she then turned around and donated to the Salvation Army’s Back-to-School Backpack program.

Since her initial success, Myah has been busy replenishing her stock and is ready for the next Pre-Owned Uniform Sale on October 21 from 3-5pm and October 22 from 8:30-10:30am. She is also hoping to sell them through the CDS General Store. She and her father have visited Home Depot and since built a wooden stand for her to shop her wares. Myah has decided that proceeds from future sales will be donated to The David Cornfield Melanoma Fund in honour of Ms. Collins.

“I raised a lot of money for a good cause while doing good for the environment,” says Myah. “This material has more than one purpose and this way we make the most of it before it decomposes.”

Congratulations Myah on your entrepreneurial and environmental spirit!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
