Inclement Weather Procedures

Introducing a new late opening procedure.

It’s that time of year again with Jack Frost nipping at our noses, that we must think about our inclement weather protocol. First and foremost, our snow day decisions are driven by student safety.
Given the incredibly wide commuter catchment area we draw from at The Country Day School, snow days are called in an effort to prevent accidents from happening on the road.

Last year was a particularly challenging snow season. We have been thinking long and hard about how to mitigate the loss of class time. We will continue our “Code Snow” program below, but additionally we will be piloting a new late opening procedure – see below for details. This new tool will allow us to open the school if weather and road conditions are improving/expected to improve through the morning rush hour and thereby avoid the loss of an entire school day. As long as we are able to reach the school safely, this new pilot program may help us salvage important academic and co-curricular time.

In many cases though, in the interests of safety and in the presence of extreme weather conditions, it will be necessary to close the School for the entire day, or to close the school early following our normal inclement weather protocol.

To be clear we now have three ways to respond to possible inclement weather:
  • close completely
  • close early
  • open late
In all circumstances, please use your own discretion when making a determination whether you can safely travel CDS using your particular vehicle, travelling from your area and your own unique weather and road conditions.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
