An Incentive to Use Reusable Mugs & Water Bottles
The Senior School Environmental Council wants to encourage all CDS community members to bring reusable mugs to school as an alternative to plastic packaging for coffee and other hot drinks.
They are calling this initiative Mugshots, whereby the Environmental Council members will take photos of those students or faculty members who carry their own mugs and those “do gooders” will have their names entered into a draw which will take place at the end of each month.
Those whose name is picked will be awarded 5 House points and will receive a prize from a variety of sustainable products, including innovative products like the Stojo reusable pocket mug that folds up so you can bring it wherever you go, or the collapsible Final Straw that can attach to your keys and comes in a convenient small case.
"Our goal for the new “Mugshot” campaign is to get the Senior School involved in taking initiative to reduce the plastic use within the School,” explains Anne-Marie Bassi, a Grade 11 member of the Environmental Council. In addition to the CDS’s ban on plastic, single-use water bottles, this is “an action that hopefully inspires individuals to take personal steps that lead toward a more sustainable future."
At Monday’s Assembly it was announced that Mr. Mejia, who carries his travel coffee mug wherever he goes, was the first prize recipient!
Enviro Council members, Anne-Marie, Eden and Kennedy, hope everyone will take part in this campaign that not only ignites CDS House spirit and competition, but also encourages a more sustainable effort among the entire CDS community.
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
