Recent Successes on the Debating Front

For the first time in five years, CDS took home the Sterling Hall Cup trophy for the best school at this Middle School debate tournament earlier this month.
Congratulations to Olivia Budweth and Diya Mangat for winning first place in the junior category, with Molly Griffiths and Lily Chen winning third place.

In the senior category, Averie Easton and Sarin Gosal won first place, with Sarah Croxon and Ethan Wahba winning second place.

Equally exciting news is that all five of our competitors at the Junior National Public Speaking Qualifier held at Villanova College this week qualified to represent Ontario at Nationals in Vancouver this spring!

Ethan Wahba came 1st overall in impromptu debate and 2nd overall in impromptu speaking, earning him 5th place in the entire tournament and securing his place in the Junior National competition.

Sarah Croxon came 2nd overall in impromptu debate, 2nd overall in interpretive reading, and 3rd overall in the competition securing her position in the Junior National Tournament.

Millie Steinmann came 1st overall in impromptu speaking, 2nd overall in solo acting, and 2nd overall in persuasive speaking, allowing her to place 2nd overall in the entire tournament and securing her position in the Junior National Tournament.

Meanwhile, Reese Falkenberg and Jessie Rudin came in 8th and 11th places, respectively, which means that while they qualified for Nationals, each school can only take the top three. What a tremendous showing for CDS!

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
