Keeping Technology Devices Clean & Disinfected During COVID-19

Sheldon Rose, Director of Technology and Creativity
As you are probably aware, most cell phones, iPads, tablets, stylus, mice, laptops and desktops are handled with frequent regularity - and are therefore potentially teeming with bacteria and viruses.  For many, I suspect, those surfaces are rarely disinfected with the careful consideration they deserve.  Under ordinary circumstances, cleaning your computing devices once or twice a week may be sufficient. However, under the current world conditions, especially if you've been using your devices in public, we recommend a daily cleaning and disinfection.
As with hand washing, the types of cleansers and contact duration are two crucial factors in disinfecting control surfaces. First, clean and disinfect your hands before handling your devices to reduce contamination. It is also recommended to disconnect devices from power sources before you begin. Soap and water, applied to a damp cloth (never spray anything on your components) is suggested for cleaning, except for uncoated digitized glass like in many Apple products.

It is important to make a complete and sustained contact with the surface and its periphery, be it a keyboard, screen protector or mouse. Remove any remaining residue and moisture with a microfiber cloth. For Apple glass, especially touch-sensitive devices, specially designed cleansers are recommended. The use of common household products, including bleach, is never recommended for computing devices. Once cleaned, these same devices may be disinfected with products containing at least 70% alcohol. And finally, please remember to once again clean and disinfect your own hands.

Should you require more specific information for other industries, consider these guidelines from the Canada Food Inspection Agency, Sanitation and/or Decontamination of Mobile Devices, IPAC and Vancouver Coastal Health IT Cleaning and Disinfection or the CDC Disinfection and Sanitation Guidelines.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
