Peer Tutoring Has Gone Digital!
Peer Tutoring student Co-Coordinators Avery Benlolo ‘21 and Christina Chkarboul ‘21, along with Ms. Purdy in the Student Services Centre, are excited to announce that the Peer Tutoring program, which facilitates tutoring pairs between students and allows students in need to receive valuable one-on-one help, has gone digital!
The program is a hallmark of the Student Services Centre at CDS and is critical to reinforcing learning from within the classroom and offering students subject support as well as organizational help. Remote learning is undoubtedly posing challenges for many students and though teachers remain a central resource for extra help and support, the Peer Tutoring program’s importance in supplementing teacher-student interaction is as clear now as ever.
In addition to traditional one-on-one tutoring sessions, which we encourage students to make use of to help prepare for tests or to help keep up with their work, the program will now offer proofreading services, which will allow students to get some feedback on their essays or assignments before submitting them. Google Meet will be used as the primary software for students to meet and discuss classwork face-to-face, and proofreading will be done, for the most part, through comments and suggestions on Google Docs.
Though the current situation certainly poses some difficulties in instruction and coordination, we are confident that students who are in need of academic support at this time will be able to thoroughly benefit from the virtual program. We encourage students to reach out to their guidance counsellors, all of whom may be easily reached by email, if they find themselves looking for additional support, whether it be in the form of organizational assistance or help studying for an upcoming test. Teachers who believe students may benefit from the program are also urged to contact guidance counsellors and the Peer Tutoring organizers.
We have already gathered substantial interest from students willing to tutor, both in helping out with one-on-one sessions and proofreading services. We’d like to extend our gratitude to all the students who continue to express their initiative and dedication by volunteering to help with the experimental virtual Peer Tutoring program. It is our hope that the program proves to be useful for students who could use some added support right now and continues to promote exemplary engagement within the school community!
Land Acknowledgment
The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
