CDS Remembers Ian Sokullu '19

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Ian Sokullu, a member of the Class of 2019, passed away on Monday, December 14th, after a courageous journey with cancer.
Ian attended CDS for all four years of Senior School. It was with the help of his teachers, and support of his friends, that he made it through his final year here and went on to enjoy his first term at the University of Waterloo. This was his dream come true. Just last week, he celebrated his 19th Birthday with a few alumni friends, and this Saturday some of them will be his pallbearers.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ian’s parents, Kyung Soon (Sue) Go and Turker Ugur Sokullu, and his younger sisters, Kayla, and Claire during this heartbreaking time.

Due to current circumstances surrounding the pandemic, his funeral service will be a private event. In Ian’s obituary, his parents ask that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to SickKids Hospital.

The CDS flags will be lowered to half-staff for the remainder of the week in Ian’s memory.

Land Acknowledgment

The Country Day School wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. Our nearest Indigenous Nations are now the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum covenant is often cited as an example of the shared responsibility for caring for these lands among the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee peoples who would call these their traditional territories. CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection to this land can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.
