Dr. Hart Jackson '02 Shares Academic Journey with SS Students

On Monday, our Senior School students were treated to a virtual presentation by CDS alumnus Dr. Hartland Jackson '02. Hart has been working in breast cancer researcher for the past six years at the University of Zurich and recently moved back to Toronto to launch his own research lab at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also participating in an antibody test trial having contracting COVID-19 back in March.
Hart talked about his academic and career journey and shared that some of his favorite classes while at CDS were actually economics and math. He also gave a shout out to his English and computer science teachers for providing him with a strong foundation for writing which prepared him well for all of the grant proposals and data analysis he works on today. Back then, he had never even considered becoming a scientist - and actually started off as a Business/Math major. It wasn't until his first year of university, that he discovered that that wasn't the right fit and recalibrated to pursue Biochemistry instead.

"Where you commit to go for university, it's okay to change your mind,” Hart told the students. “You're going to change, life is going to change, you won't be the same person in five years. You (most likely) are never going to do one job you're whole life - so be open to change and switching things up." You just never know which subjects might evolve into a passion further down the road.

Hart is the son of the late Al Jackson, a beloved CDS teacher who passed away from ALS in 2007. The Al Jackson award is named in his honour and given each year to a deserving GY student whose positive, supportive, considerate and optimistic approach to school life has enriched the lives of other students by helping them progress through their year and by caring about their well-being. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Land Acknowledgment

CDS wishes to recognize and acknowledge the land on which the school operates. For thousands of years, these have been the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. We also recognize the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee peoples who also shared this land.  CDS respects the relationship with these lands and recognizes that our connection can be strengthened by our continued relationship with all First Nations, by acknowledging our shared responsibility to respect and care for these lands and waters for future generations.
