Euclid Math Contest
On Wednesday April 7th, seven highly motivated Senior School students participated in the annual Euclid math contest. This is the most challenging of the University of Waterloo math contests and is offered to students at the Grade 12 level or below. It is a 2.5 hour, paper-only contest containing 10 questions that require clear explanations of how answers are obtained with the use of proper mathematical form.
All students participated remotely this year supervised over Google Meet. They were required to download the contest, write their solutions in the provided booklet, and then upload their solutions to Google Classroom. The booklets were then printed and couriered to the University of Waterloo for marking by hand. All participants are recognized in their efforts to complete the contest considering the unique circumstances this year.
As often happens with technology, there were a few glitches. Despite experiencing issues with his internet connection on the morning of the contest, we had one student, Kevin Liu '21, go “over and above” in his desire to complete the contest, as he was determined to not let the opportunity to participate pass him by. He arranged a separate time to write, later in the day, supervised by his grandmother. He ensured additional integrity by recording himself while he was writing. Kevin then arranged for his completed contest to be immediately couriered to the university at his own time and expense. What an effort!
17,466 students participated worldwide, with an average score of 56 (out of 100). The school medal is awarded to the top score of those who participated at CDS. This year, there was a tie for the high score. Jordan Chen '23 (Grade 10) and Kevin Liu '21 (Grade 12) both achieved a score of 68 and will be receiving school medals at a later date.

Finally, to all of the graduating year students who have participated in the Waterloo math contests over the years: Congratulations on your outstanding achievement and your exceptional efforts in preparing for these contests as a result of your ongoing passion and enthusiasm for Mathematics.
Land Acknowledgment
